Improper step flashing is the leading cause of roof leaks at wall-to-roof transitions. Step flashing needs to be woven between shingle courses with each piece extending 4" above the shingle exposure. We see North Anson homes where the last roofer used continuous L-flashing or just caulked the gap. That always fails. We tear it out and install proper step flashing with a kick-out diverter at the bottom per IRC R905.2.8.3.
